DESERVE started the comprehensive training programme titled, ‘Invest in a Girl, Reap Sustainable Advantages (IGRSA) in 2015. It is a training programme spanning 26 weeks covering topics on sexual and reproductive health, HIV, career development, and youth participation in development, among others. Priority beneficiaries have been adolescent girls 10 to 19 years. This project aims to:
• Empower the trainees to become peer educators in their various schools, groups and associations.
• Contribute to their well-being through sharing lessons on personal leadership and ways of improving self-esteem.
The pilot phase of this project initially intended to train 30 young people but ended up training 34. It was in collaboration with the Cameroon National Association for Family Welfare (CAMNAFAW) Bamenda, and the Cameroon Youth Network North West.
Key achievements of this project so far:
• The training of 34 adolescents and young people who became qualified peer educators.
• Most of the trained young people are involved directly in other projects with DESERVE, CAMNAFAW and the Cameroon Youth Network and helped to train other youth in their schools and associations.
• The development of a youth-friendly empowerment manual for training of peer educators
