Desmond Nji Atanga
Desmond Nji Atanga is the founder of Deserve (2015). He co-founded the Progressing Association (PASS) in 2010. He started youth work and leadership at the age of 12. He has more than 10 years of experience working on the socio-economic empowerment of youth, fight against HIV/AIDS among key vulnerable populations like girls, women and youth and also increasing awareness for healthy living through sexual and reproductive health services. He has done so through many public speaking and media programs, community town halls, school counseling and one-to-one counseling. He upholds the conviction that health is an imperative asset for economic growth and development.
He holds key leadership positions among youth. He is a Women Deliver Young Leader since 2015 where he is currently serving on the global stage as an advocate for the sexual and reproductive health of girls, women and youth. He is the National First Vice President of the Cameroon Youth Network which has been working with UNICEF-Cameroon in the Adolescent Participation and Development Program (APD) since 2004. As National First Vice President of the Cameroon Youth Network, he has participated in key stakeholder planning meetings for HIV primary prevention programmes in partnership with UNICEF. He is also an elected delegate to the Cameroon National Youth Council. He is also a member of the United Nations Major Group for Children and Youth and an Expert Advisory Community member of Family Planning 2020.
Desmond is a strong promoter and support of the Deliver for Good Campaign in Cameroon; which offers a gender lens to the Sustainable Development Goals. He won a project grant on promoting Comprehensive Sexuality Education for youth in Cameroon secondary schools from Women Deliver and the John and Johnson Foundation in July, 2016.
Owing to his work in the fight against HIV/AIDS among youth in Cameroon, in 2013, Desmond was bestowed the Cameroon’s Best Youth Leader award by the Project for the Prevention of HIV/AIDS in the Central African Sub-Region (PPSAC) in N’djamena, Chad. As founder of Deserve, Desmond remains ever driven with the words, ‘Let all your things be done with charity.’
This holder of a postgraduate diploma in Economics from the University of Bamenda, Cameron and a Bachelor of Science degree in the same discipline from the University of Dschang, Cameroon is an inspirational speaker with wide public speaking experiences across the world.
He does fashion designing and sewing, skills which he acquired from his mother at the age of 5. He also composes music for choral performances.
